Clarice Lispector

We included “The Hen” by Clarice Lispector in our South American story selection. South America offered a treasure trove of stories, and MRU readers had differing views on the story. Lispector was described as “that rare person who looked like Marlene Dietrich and wrote like Virginia Woolf” – would you add her to your list of “writers no one reads”?

Enjoy an excerpt from “Near to the Wild Heart”by Lispector, which she began writing as a 22-year-old law student.

“When I reread what I’ve written I feel like I’m swallowing my own vomit.”
